Ten years ago, Czech beer meant one thing: cold golden lager. Today, Prague has one of the most exciting craft beer scenes in Europe, alongside its traditional brewing heritage. Here’s where to find the best of both.
Traditional vs Craft: What’s the Difference in Prague?
Traditional Czech beer (světlý ležák, tmavý ležák) follows centuries-old recipes: simple ingredients, long lagering times, exceptional freshness. Craft beer brings in international styles (IPAs, stouts, sours, NEIPAs) often brewed with Czech hops and Bohemian yeast. The best Prague spots do both.
Best Craft Beer Bars in Prague
Dva Kohouti (Karlín)
The most celebrated craft brewery in Prague. Co-founded by Adam Matuška, considered the godfather of Czech craft beer. The Karlín location has 20+ taps of house-brewed and guest beers. The courtyard is packed in summer.
Vinohradský Pivovar
A restored historic brewery in Vinohrady. The original malthouse is still intact and visible from the bar. They brew traditional Czech lagers alongside more experimental styles. One of the most atmospheric pubs in the city.
Zlý Časy (Nusle)
A craft beer institution in Prague. One of the first bars in the city to take craft seriously. 30+ taps, regular rotating selection from Czech and international breweries. No-frills atmosphere, serious beer selection.
Craft Beer Spot (Náměstí Míru)
Right by our meeting point in Vinohrady. A small but well-curated craft bar with a good selection of Czech microbreweries.
Czech Craft Breweries Worth Knowing
- Matuška (Broumy): arguably the best Czech craft brewery, small batch IPAs and lagers
- Únětický Pivovar: traditional lager brewed just outside Prague, exceptional quality
- Clock (Tábor): pioneers of Czech craft, known for American-style IPAs
- Sibeeria: small Prague brewery, creative styles, good seasonal releases
Traditional Czech Beer: Still the Best Baseline
Despite the craft scene, a well-poured traditional Czech lager remains one of the best beer experiences in the world. Unfiltered, unpasteurised, served at 8–10°C from a proper tap. A Kozel dark at a neighbourhood pub will beat most craft beers for sheer drinkability.
