Prague has more breweries per capita than almost any city in the world. While Pilsner Urquell and Budvar are famous worldwide, the real magic happens in the local microbreweries: small, independent operations where beer is brewed on-site and poured fresh from the tank.

Here is our guide to the best microbreweries in Prague.

What Makes Prague’s Microbreweries Special?

Czech beer has a 1,000-year history. Unlike mass-produced lagers, microbrewery beer is brewed in small batches using traditional methods, unfiltered, unpasteurised, and as fresh as it gets. The difference in taste is immediately obvious.

Top Microbreweries in Prague

1. Pivovar Ossegg — Cistercian Abbey Brewery

One of Prague’s most unique breweries, run by Cistercian monks. The brewing process follows centuries-old traditions. Our brewery tour always starts here: guests learn the brewing process directly from a guide trained by the local brew-master and receive a Brewing Master certificate.

2. Vinohradský Pivovar

Located in a beautifully restored historic building in the Vinohrady district. The malthouse is intact and visible from the bar. One of the most atmospheric breweries in the city.

3. Dva Kohouti (Karlín)

A modern microbrewery in the hip Karlín district, co-founded by renowned Czech brewer Adam Matuška. Known for innovative craft ales alongside traditional Czech lagers. The outdoor courtyard is perfect in summer.

4. Pivovar Národní

Right in the city centre, just metres from the National Theatre. Brews its own lagers and seasonal specials. A favourite among locals who work in the area.

5. U Medvídků

One of the oldest pub-breweries in Prague, located in the Old Town. Famous for its strong dark lager “X33”, one of the strongest beers in the Czech Republic at 12.6% ABV.
